BLEU ET ROSE - HYMEN
The series “Hymen” addresses the issue of society’s treatment of women and women’s bodies and the effects on their psyches. Simple tarpaulins, found in the photographer’s native Iran, are used to address a very sensitive issue and the impacts that result from societal norms and attitudes. This conceptual approach engages the viewer with the seductive color and interesting shapes of the every-day tarpaulin. Once engaged by this minimalistic and aesthetically pleasing approach, the viewer must consider a deeper meaning of the work. Because the focus is on a very narrow anatomy, the viewer is asked to consider the objectification of women not only in early years but also throughout life and the impacts of an attitude and treatment that fails to consider the whole person.
